A Good Way To Advertise Ham Radio.

If you read my blog about Ham Radio being America's best kept secret, here is a way to get the word out cheaply and have fun at the same time. You have seen these LED badges at fleamarkets, hamfests, etc., haven't you? Well, I bought one that is software programmable from batteriesamerica.com for $25. It has 10 different memories so you can program 10 different messages into it, fitting whatever occasion. The badge runs on a little coin cell battery that lasts about 2 years. It attaches to your shirt with two magnets. Hold the magnets at the spot where you want the badge and then place the badge where the magnets are and you are good to go. No pins or holes in your shirt!
I programmed my badge with things like "Ask me about America's best kept secret....Ham Radio!" Another good one is "You never heard about Ham Radio? Ask me!" My brother and I have had more fun with these little LED badges! We go into restaurants and get curious looks and stares from a lot of people and some are even brave enough to ask us about them. Then we tell them about Ham Radio! Some have never heard of such a thing and some have, but know little about it. These little "walking billboards" get people interested and give YOU the opportunity to tell them about the best hobby in the world!
When you wear your badge, you had better be prepared to give the people a good intelligent explanation of what Ham Radio is or you will be looked at as a dummy that doesn't know what he's talking about. Also, be prepared to have a card with your name, address, phone number and the ARRL website printed on it so you can hand it to folks who ask about Ham Radio. You never know who might call you up and ask more questions!
